The town of Stratford in Fairfield county is situated on Long Island Sound and the Housatonic River in southwestern Connecticut. It was founded by the Puritans in 1639 and is considered one of the state’s oldest towns.  As of 2020, Stratford has a population of 52,120. The town has a total area of 19.9 square miles, 17.6 square miles of which is composed of land, and 2.3 square miles is water. 

Stratford contains five islands: Long Island, Carting Island, Peacock Island, Pope’s Flat, and Goose Island. All of the islands are in the Housatonic River and are uninhabitable because of their low elevations.

Long Beach

The beach is approximately 1.5 miles long. Visitors and residents are allowed to use the eastern end of the beach which has public parking and lifeguards. The central area of the beach is for nature lovers. A nature preserve land that was reserved for wildlife, specifically nesting seabirds, such as kestrels and ospreys.

Russian Beach

Locally known as Lordship Beach, it was named Russian Beach because of its use by the Russian workers from the Sikorsky Manufacturing Company during the early 20th century. The workers spent most of their time on this beach. Activities like fishing and swimming are allowed but there are no lifeguards.

Short Beach

The beach is 30 acres in size and sits adjacent to the mouth of the Housatonic River. In addition to water activities, tourists and residents can also play basketball, tennis, volleyball and softball. It has three picnic pavilions and a handicapped-accessible playground. Short beach is also the summer home of the piping plover and the least tern, which are ground nesting birds. They need a secluded private area on the beach to raise their young.
