Greenwich is the southernmost, as well as, the westernmost town in the state of Connecticut. The town has a total area of 67.2 square miles, which is composed of 47.8 square miles of land and 19.4 square miles of water. As of 2020 census, it is home to 63,000 residents.
Greenwich was settled in 1640. In honor of one of its founders, Elizabeth Fones Winthrop, Greenwich Point was first known as “Elizabeth Neck”. It was only on May 11, 1665, when the Connecticut General Assembly in Hartford declared Greenwich as a town. It is the largest town on Connecticut’s “Gold Coast”.
For many years, Greenwich Point was a restricted area, open only to residents of the town. After a lawyer complained about it and with the Supreme Court of Connecticut’s approval, the town had to change its beach access policy in 2001.
